- Story Text: Diana Sosoaca, the leader of the far-right group SOS Romania submitted her candidacy for the May ballot re-run on Thursday throwing the contest wide open after pro-Russian far-right candidate Calin Georgescu was barred from running.
Romania is set to repeat its two-round presidential election on May 4 and 18 after the Constitutional Court voided the initial ballot in December, following accusations of Russian meddling in Georgescu's favour, which have been denied by Moscow and Georgescu.
Sosoaca was already banned from running for president by the Constitutional Court in the last election in October, because her antisemitic, pro-Russian views meant she would be unable to uphold the rule of law if she were elected.
Romania's central election authority said on Sunday its decision to bar Georgescu was based on this Constitutional Court ruling as well as the court's decision to void December's election after concluding that it had been spoiled by vote manipulation, campaign irregularities and non-transparent funding along with suspected Russian meddling, a charge denied by Moscow.
Despite the October ruling, Sosoaca, a European Parliament lawmaker, placed her bid again on Thursday (March 13) arguing that from a legal standpoint, no person can be judged and sanctioned twice for the same acts.
