- Story Text: An almost total lunar eclipse pierced through the clouds in the sky of the Canary Islands in the early hours of Friday (March 14).
Astrophotographer Eduardo Robaina was in place to witness the phenomenon but “the weather didn’t help,” he said.
The lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon align such that the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow.
While the eclipse lasts roughly six hours, the totality period where the Moon is completely in the Earth’s shadow, lasts over just an hour.
According to NASA, the next total lunar eclipse will fall on September 7, 2025.
