- Story Text: Analyst Andre Alves said on Wednesday (March 12) political instability is likely to carry on beyond a possible new election in Portugal.
Lawmakers voted on Tuesday (March 11) 142-88, with zero abstentions, against a confidence motion that was presented last Thursday (March 6) by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro after 11 months in office.
He called the vote after the opposition questioned his integrity over the dealings of a consultancy firm he founded, which is now run by his sons.
Montenegro has denied wrongdoing or any ethical shortcomings by the firm, which has contracts with private companies.
Although an early general election seems almost certain, analysts predict no clear political mandate will emerge from the vote, with many Portuguese expressing election fatigue.
It is now up to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa whether to call a new parliamentary election after a round of consultations that are likely to take place in the next few days.
He has said a new ballot could be held in mid-May.
