- Story Text: Residents in Naples and nearby towns spent a tense night in the open early on Thursday (March 13) after an overnight earthquake jolted southern Italy, shaking buildings, cutting power, and sending frightened locals onto the streets.
The quake struck at 01:25 local time (00:25 GMT), registering a magnitude of 4.4 according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of three kilometres. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded it slightly lower at 4.2 magnitude with a depth of 10 kilometres.
The epicentre was located near the coastal town of Pozzuoli, just west of Naples. Local emergency teams rescued one person from the rubble of a partially collapsed house, authorities confirmed. Several minor aftershocks were felt in the region, intensifying concerns among residents.
Power outages were reported in parts of Naples, and many families chose to remain outdoors or in their vehicles overnight, fearing further tremors.
Footage from affected areas showed damage to buildings and cars, including one vehicle with a smashed windscreen.
While no fatalities have been reported, civil protection officials have launched a damage assessment operation and established a coordination centre in the region.
