- Story Text: A partial lunar eclipse pierced through the cloudy London skyline in the early hours of Friday (March 14).
The city residents were expecting to see a blood-red moon, but were instead met with a yellow-tinged moon often obscured by drifting clouds.
Elsewhere in the world, the full lunar eclipse painted the sky with a rosy hue.
The lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon align such that the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow.
While the eclipse lasts roughly six hours, the totality period where the Moon is completely in the Earth’s shadow, lasts over just an hour.
According to NASA, the next total lunar eclipse will fall on September 7, 2025.
