- Story Text: Families of victims of former President Rodrigo Duterte's "war on drugs" in Manila on Friday (March 14) watched a live broadcast of the firebrand leader's pre-trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague and demanded justice for their loved ones.
Family members shared how their loved ones were killed during the anti-drug campaign under Duterte's administration and demanded accountability for their deaths.
Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, is set to be the first Asian former head of state to go on trial at the ICC, a court of last resort created more than two decades ago to prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, aggression and genocide.
Elsewhere in Manila, about two dozen student activists held a protest and called upon the ICC to swiftly bring justice for those killed by Duterte's directives.
