  • Story Text:Italian wine producers on Friday (March 14) expressed their concern after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap a 200% tariff on wine and other alcohol from the European Union in response to the bloc's levies on U.S. whiskey.
    "Getting a deal with Trump has become very difficult", Rosa Costantini, owner of a wine shop in central Rome and wine producer herself, told Reuters. "We suffer from their decisions, their salaries are always the same, ours not.”
    Her "Villa Simone" winery, located in the 'Castelli' hamlet near Rome, produces prosecco and a famed local white wine called Frascati DOC but now she foresaw the downsides for her activity business but also for U.S. wine lovers.
    Trump's flip-flops on tariffs have roiled global markets, rattling investors and consumers.
    He upped his tariff onslaught this week as soon as major U.S. trading partners retaliated against the trade barriers erected by Washington, opening a new front in a global trade war that has roiled financial markets and raised recession fears.
    Trump's threat came in response to a European Union plan to impose tariffs on American whiskey and other products next month -- which itself is a reaction to Trump's 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports that took effect on Wednesday (March 12).
