- Story Text: The United Nations' Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, said on Friday (March 14) that Syria stood at a pivotal moment and that now was the time for a "genuine, credible and inclusive transitional government".
Syria kept a central role for Islamic law in a constitutional declaration issued on Thursday intended to serve as the foundation for the interim period during a five-year transitional period.
"Syria now stands at a pivotal moment," the spokesperson for Pedersen, Jenifer Fenton told reporters in Geneva.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a Sunni Islamist who spearheaded a lightning offensive that toppled Assad from power in December, has promised to run Syria in an inclusive way.
He has been grappling with the biggest test of his leadership in the wake of a wave of sectarian killings in the coastal region, blamed on fighters aligned with his government.
Pedersen called for a credible, independent investigation into what he described as "appalling violence" that has given rise to grave concerns about the future.
