- Story Text: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will urge approximately 25 world leaders on Saturday (March 15) to make concrete commitments to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire.
Saturday's video call builds on a flurry of diplomacy between European and other Western countries to find ways to help Ukraine after former U.S. President Donald Trump altered Washington's supportive approach and initiated peace talks with Russia.
The nationality leading the peacekeeping mission would be "one of the negotiation disputes," said Dr. Samir Puri, director of the Centre for Global Governance and Security, explaining that "some nationalities are significantly more provocative to one or more of the warring sides." "The rules of self-defence" will be a challenging question to resolve during the negotiations, according to Dr. Puri.
On Thursday, Putin stated that Russia supported a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in principle, but that fighting could not be paused until a number of conditions were met. He has said he wants Ukraine to abandon its ambitions to join NATO, for Russia to control the entirety of the four Ukrainian regions it has claimed as its own, and for the size of the Ukrainian army to be limited—demands rejected by Kyiv. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
