- Story Text: Argentine security forces and an unlikely mix of retirees and hooligan groups clashed on Wednesday (March 12) in front of the Congress during a protest against President Javier Milei pension cuts.
These weekly demonstrations, held outside the Argentine Congress, have been organized by retirees demanding improved pensions and the reversal of Milei's cuts to free medications, among other grievances.
However, this week, the march took a different turn as hooligan groups –including two of the Argentina’s “Big Five,” Boca Juniors and Racing— from various Argentine soccer teams reportedly joined in, according to the Ministry of Security.
The unexpected support came after previous protests ended with several injured elderly.
Libertarian President Javier Milei has slashed pension payouts since taking office in late 2023, part of a government spending overhaul meant to tamp down on rampant inflation.
But that has come at the detriment to Argentina's most vulnerable, the opposition alleges.
Police used water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse the thousands of protestors outside of Congress after some were seen throwing rocks and other objects.
Authorities did not immediately report how many people had been hurt or detained.
