- Story Text: U.S. tariffs on UK steel is "the last thing we need," a steel industry expert told Reuters on Wednesday (March 12).
Britain did not immediately retaliate to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on Wednesday, though Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was disappointed by the move and that all options remained on the table.
Trump imposed global tariffs of 25% on all imports of steel and aluminum which he said would reorder global trade in favour of the United States.
"We're already in a particularly challenging market environment, a highly oversupplied environment with weak demand as well, both globally and in the UK. We face particularly high costs, energy costs as well. And so the last thing we need is both the knock on our direct exports to the US, but also that high import pressure from material coming from all over the world, " Chrysa Glystra, Director for Trade and Economics policy at UK Steel, said.
Britain had hoped to avoid tariffs on its steel sector, which is small but produces specialist products for defence and other industries. Trump said last month the two countries might reach a bilateral trade deal that would avert duties.
