- Story Text: Rakeyzah Interactive in Sudan's de facto capital Port Sudan provides a lifeline for Sudanese women displaced by conflict and struggling with the trauma of war and of loss.
The director of the programme, Oufkir Sherif, says that one of their centres, the Sobajo centre, is not only a safe haven for the women it also gives them an opportunity to earn an income which he sees as an essential step to healing.
The Sobajo centre trains women in various handicrafts like embroidery, fabric dying, beading and pottery which they can sell.
Sobajo was established in 2018 to support female refugees from South Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. It is one of various projects that Rakeyzah Interactive operates, not only to help women become financially independent, but also help them build a new life through psychological support, director of Rakeyzah Interactive, Oufkir Sherif, said.
One of the beneficiaries of the project, an internally displaced Sudanese woman, Mai Muawiya, said the program helped her deal with the loss of some of her family members and of her mother adding that her husband was arrested by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Reuters could not independently verify her account.
“Thank God, I overcame psychological and economic challenges,” she said.
Sudan has been at war since fighting broke out in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces over disagreements ahead of a planned transition to civilian rule. The war has caused a humanitarian disaster, with mass displacement and widespread hunger.
