- Story Text: Skies across Latin America glowed on Friday (March 14) as a rare total lunar eclipse transformed the full moon into a breathtaking reddish orb.
The phenomenon unfolded under ideal viewing conditions as the full moon rose in clear skies over major cities including Caracas, Bogota, Mexico City, and Ciudad Juarez.
At planetariums in Caracas and Bogota, enthusiastic crowds of astronomy enthusiasts gathered for organized viewing events, marking the region's first total lunar eclipse since 2022, according to NASA data.
Equipped with telescopes, specialized cameras, and smartphone apps, observers tracked the eclipse through its phases, with particular excitement as the moon entered totality.
In Mexico, the eclipse was visible from Mexico City to the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez.
The lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into the Earth’s shadow. While the eclipse lasts roughly six hours, the totality period, when the Moon is completely in the Earth’s shadow, lasts over just an hour.
