- Story Text:White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded on Monday (March 17) to a French politician's comment, saying the United States will not return the Statue of Liberty.
During a press briefing, Leavitt was asked by a journalist to comment on French European parliament member Raphaël Glucksmann statement, who reportedly said the U.S. should give back the 19th-century gift from France over U.S. president Donald Trump’s decision “to side with the tyrants” against Ukraine.
Leavitt called Glucksmann an “unnamed low-level French politician."
"It’s only because of America that the French are not speaking German right now,” she said, referring to the Allied Powers, including the U.S., who liberated France from Nazi occupation during World War II.
