- Story Text:Heavy rains continued to batter Spain for the third consecutive week on Tuesday (March 18), leading to severe flooding in the southern region of Andalusia.
In the town of Cartama, residents found themselves battling once again rising waters as brown, muddy floods from the overflow from the Gudalhorce river collapsed drains and inundate homes. This marks the second time in less than five months that Cartama has faced such devastation.
Residents were seen struggling to navigate through the flooded streets as others worked to brush water away from their homes and streets.
Among those affected is Antonia, who walks across her flooded garden, reflecting on the nightmare of experiencing such destruction again so soon.
Just months ago, Antonia had begun to rebuild her life with donated furniture after the previous flood in October. Now, she has lost everything once more.
"It happened again in such a short period of time," she laments, expressing her despair.
Antonio Fernandez, another resident affected by the floods, recounts how his house and those of his three sons have been flooded twice in less than five months, resulting in the loss of furniture, appliances, and clothing.
At least two people are missing and hundreds were evacuated in the southern region of Andalusia, where several rivers had overflowed, or were at risk of doing so.
Spaniards are still on edge after torrential rains four months ago in the eastern Valencia region led to the country's deadliest natural disaster in decades. Many blamed local and national officials for being too late in sending emergency alerts.
