- Story Text: Argentina's Security Minister Patricia Bullrich defended the actions taken by security forces on Thursday (March 13) to disperse a march of retirees, supported by soccer fans, in front of the Congress, which ended in clashes with the police and resulted in dozens of injuries and arrests.
On Wednesday, Argentine pensioners gathered outside the congressional building, accompanied by soccer fans from rival teams who offered their support after previous protests had left several elderly participants injured.
According to Bullrich, the decision to initiate the operation at the outset of the protest was due to participants carrying firearms, bladed weapons, and even nails intended to puncture police vehicles.
In response, police deployed water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse the thousands of protesters, who retaliated by throwing rocks and other objects at the officers.
Authorities reported that nearly 90 people were detained, and 15 individuals were hospitalized.
Among the injured was photojournalist Pablo Grillo, who was struck in the head by a gas canister and is reportedly in intensive care, according to Argentine media.
