- Story Text: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Tajikistani counterpart Emomali Rahmon on Monday (March 17) held talks and attended a ceremony of signing ceremony of bilateral agreements on environment, finance and security.
Speaking after the ceremony, Putin said that Russia will facilitate peace and stability in Central Asia, taking into account "challenges and threats" originating from the territory of Afghanistan.
Russian 201th military base deployed in Tajikistan is instrumental in ensuring security in the region, Putin added.
Rahmon visits Russia weeks after his ruling People's Democratic Party predictably won parliamentary elections and has now 47 out of 63 seats in the lower house of the national parliament.
He has first been elected President of Tajikistan in 1994 during the civil war which lasted from 1992 till 1997 with at least 100,000 people killed.
Tajikistan is a member Commonwealth of Independent states and Collective Security Treaty Organisation alongside several other post-Soviet countries. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
