- Story Text:Berlin Zoo's twin panda cubs, Leni and Lotti, explored their outdoor enclosure for the first time on Thursday (March 20), climbing trees, rocks and platforms and snacking on tasty bamboo.
Leni and Lotti have been practising climbing on smaller platforms in their indoor enclosure for the past few months, but with the sun out and spring officially here, it was time for the 7-month-old cubs to try the higher climbs in their outdoor area, Florian Sicks, bear curator at Berlin Zoological Garden, told Reuters TV.
Climbing is not just a recreational activity, but an essential skill for the giant panda, as it is how they escape from potential predators in the wild, Sicks explained.
However, as with any skill, it's important to start slowly, and Sicks was pleased to see that the twins didn't climb the tallest trees right away, but explored their surroundings more slowly. "It couldn't have gone better today," he said.
Born in August 2024, Leni and Lotti are the offspring of panda couple Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, who have been on loan from China since 2017 under a 15-year agreement.
Visitors will now be able to see the pandas every day in their outdoor enclosure, and according to Sicks, they are likely to spend several hours outside if the weather is good - but if it is not, there is no need to worry: visitors are always welcome to come inside to visit the panda family of Leni, Lotti, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.
