- Story Text: Israel's Foreign Ministry Director General Eden Bar-Tal on Wednesday (March 19) said they were being 'cautiously optimistic' about peace and stability in the Middle East.
Speaking at the tenth edition of the annual 'Raisina Dialogue', a geopolitical affairs conference, Bar-Tal said the Middle East would be shaped by the camp of moderates and radicals and U.S. policies will support positive incentives to the moderates over radicals.
In his first term, U.S. President Donald Trump overturned decades of U.S. policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
But he has not so far given U.S. approval to the calls for full annexation, which could be an obstacle to one of his main foreign policy goals, a security pact with Saudi Arabia that could include normalizing relations with Israel in an expansion of the so-called Abraham Accords.
"It is the first time that the Abraham Accords were attest and we found…that lead me to be optimistic about development in the Middle East", Bar-Tal said.
Extending Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank would end already slim hopes of creating an independent Palestine alongside Israel, which Saudi Arabia has declared to be a non-negotiable condition for normalizing relations.
Israel pounded Gaza with airstrikes and killed more than 400 people on Tuesday (March 18). The newest attack shattered nearly two months of relative calm since a ceasefire began, as Israel warned the onslaught was "just the beginning." - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
