- Story Text:South Korean and U.S. troops on Thursday (March 20) conducted a river-crossing drill in Yeoncheon, just a few miles from the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas, to enhance their combined military operations.
Tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles crossed a river after soldiers constructed temporary floats and a bridge.
About 600 U.S. and South Korean soldiers participated in the six-day exercise around the Imjin river as 100 military equipment including helicopters and tanks were mobilised for the drills, the military said.
This river-crossing exercise was part of the wider annual military drill between South Korea and the United States called Freedom Shield, that began on March 10, despite live-fire exercises being suspended after South Korean jets mistakenly dropped bombs on a civilian town near the border earlier this month, injuring 29.
North Korea has typically demanded U.S.-South Korea joint exercises to be halted, branding them a prelude to an invasion.
The South Korean military has said the joint drills aim to strengthen the readiness of the alliance to face threats such as North Korea.
