- Story Text:As the sea turtle nesting season begins across many Venezuelan coastal sites, environmental organizations and public institutions are actively working to raise awareness about the threats human activities pose to these natural wonders.
The Venezuelan non-profit organization Ecorutas Cachiri Foundation called on volunteers on Sunday (March 16) to patrol the pristine beaches, identifying and protecting nests to ensure a safe hatching process.
Only one in 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood, with human activities representing the primary threat to their survival. These threats include pollution, illegal trade, bycatch, boat strikes, and increased beach activity.
Sea turtles play a crucial role in marine ecosystems by helping regulate seaweed and jellyfish populations and acting as nutrient spreaders in the oceans, according to Ecorutas Cachiri.
There are seven species of sea turtles, five of which inhabit Venezuelan waters, as noted by the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network.
All species are listed as vulnerable to critically endangered, except for the data-deficient Flatback turtle, according to the IUCN Red List.
The nesting season extends from March through September, the Ecorutas Cachiri Foundation reported.
