Haitians in the capital city of Port-au-Prince protested on Wednesday (March 19) against prolonged insecurity, as gangs have taken over large swathes of the city and forced many to be displaced.
Protesters, including displaced Haitians, set up barricades in the streets demanding urgent measures to combat insecurity and the resignation of the transitional presidential council's members. At least two people were injured during the protest, according to local media.
The Viv Ansanm gang alliance has been escalating attacks since government security forces this month began attacking gang enclaves with explosive-packed drones.
Haiti's government, which has called for urgent international security support since 2022, more recently requested a formal U.N. peacekeeping mission to boost under-staffed police, but this met opposition from Russia and China.
The U.N. Security Council is set to debate a hybrid security support model that would establish a budgeted office to help supply an existing, voluntary mission after lack of contributions has left it woefully under-manned and under-equipped.
Over 42,000 people were forced to flee their homes between mid-February and early March alone, and the number of people internally displaced by the violence has now surpassed 1 million.
