- Story Text: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board met in Greece on Monday (March 17) ahead of the 144th IOC Session to elect a new president.
The session will be held from March 19-21 at the Costa Navarino resort in the seaside town of Pylos, with the election taking place on Thursday.
Seven candidates are running to replace Thomas Bach, including World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe, multiple Olympic swimming champion and Zimbabwe sports minister Kirsty Coventry, and Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch, son of the late former IOC president.
International cycling chief David Lappartient, Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan, International Gymnastics Federation head Morinari Watanabe and Olympic newcomer and multimillionaire Johan Eliasch, who heads the International Ski Federation, complete the candidates' lineup.
Coe, a former Olympic 1,500 metres champion, is the biggest name of the seven candidates.
Bach, 71, served in the post for 12 years.
When the IOC's 100-plus members go to the ballot on March 20 they will be effectively deciding on the direction much of the world of sport will take for the next eight years.
With multi-billion revenues from sponsors and broadcasters, the IOC is not limited to just hosting the summer and winter Olympics. It has a direct or indirect say in every major international decision on sport, whether financial, political or structural.
