- Story Text: A teachers' strike took travelers by surprise on Thursday (March 20), as roadblocks disrupted access to Mexico City's airport, forcing many to walk on the street carrying their luggage to reach the terminals.
Members of the CNTE teachers' union initiated the strike for a second consecutive day, demanding the government repeal a 2007 education reform that placed teachers in a less favorable pension system and raised the retirement age from 58 to 65, according to local media.
The protest compelled travelers heading to Mexico City International Airport Benito Juarez to either pull over and walk to the terminal or hitch a ride with police vehicles assisting those in urgent need.
The strike is anticipated to continue through Friday (March 21) although union member Jose Antonio Altamirano stated that teachers will persist in their efforts to pressure the government until President Claudia Sheinbaum agrees to dialogue with them.
