- Story Text:Thousands of opposition supporters gathered outside the Istanbul municipality building on Thursday (March 20) to protest against the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
They waved Turkish flags and chanted slogans in protest of the decision, while main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel addressed them from on top of a bus.
Thousands of Turks ramped up protests around Istanbul on Thursday despite a ban on street gatherings in the city over what they called the undemocratic detention of IImamoglu, as the opposition sought to pin the blame on President Tayyip Erdogan. There were also some clashes between police and protesters in other cities.
