- Story Text: Protesters rallied outside Istanbul’s main police headquarters and chanted slogans on Wednesday (March 19), after Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s biggest political rival, was detained earlier in the morning.
Imamoglu was detained on charges including corruption and aiding a terrorist group in what the main opposition party called "a coup against our next president."
Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a key political ally of Erdogan, said in a statement that calling Imamoglu's detention a "coup" was a sign of "political degeneration."
The government has denied cracking down on opponents of Erdogan and said the judiciary is independent.
Human Rights Watch Turkey Director Emma Sinclair-Webb condemned the detention, calling it a "flagrant abuse of the justice system".
The move against Ekrem Imamoglu, the popular mayor of Istanbul, caps a months-long legal crackdown on opposition figures across the country which has been criticized as a politicized attempt to hurt their electoral prospects.
