- Story Text:Israeli protesters tried to breach police barriers leading to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem on Friday (March 21) as they called for his resignation.
Protesters scuffled with police who blocked their access to the street. Footage showed protesters chanting 'Time to overthrow the dictator', and 'You ruined the country and we will fix it,' as anger simmers in Israel over Netanyahu and his government.
Israeli entrepreneur who joined the protest, Uri Arnin, said he was concerned about these being "the last days of Israel as a democracy."
Netanyahu's office said the Israeli cabinet voted early on Friday to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service effective April 10, after three days of protests against the move.
Demonstrators protesting Bar's sack have joined forces with protesters angry at the decision to resume fighting in Gaza on Tuesday (March 18), breaking a two-month-old ceasefire, while 59 Israeli hostages remain in the Palestinian enclave.
The first day of resumed airstrikes killed more than 400 Palestinians, one of the deadliest days of the 17-month-old conflict, according to Gaza's health authorities.
Even before the war, tens of thousands of Israelis were joining regular demonstrations protesting a government drive to curb the power of the judiciary that critics saw as an assault on Israeli democracy but which the government said was needed to limit judicial overreach.
