- Story Text: A number of tourists were stranded in the Indonesian island of Bali on Friday (March 21) after Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano erupted on Thursday night (March 20) spewing ash clouds more than 8 kilometres (5 miles) high leading to the grounding of some flights for safety reasons.
One Australian national, 24-year old Luke Mitterer said he was struggling to find an alternative flight home from Denpasar airport after his was cancelled.
Quoting Jetstar, ABC Australia reported on Friday that several flights in and out of Bali were disrupted but that they resumed later in the evening as conditions improved.
Thursday night's large eruption of the volcano in East Nusa Tenggara province followed dozens of smaller ones since March 13, the national geological agency said in a statement. At least nine people were killed and thousands were evacuated when the Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano erupted in November last year.
Indonesia has close to 130 active volcanoes and sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an area of high seismic activity atop various tectonic plates.
