- Story Text:Muslims attended Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque for Friday prayers on Friday (March 21), as the end of the holy month of Ramadan drew near.
The second Ramadan since the start of the war in Gaza saw the renewal of hostilities in the enclave on Tuesday (March 18), after Israel effectively abandoned a ceasefire and launched a new all-out air and ground campaign against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Friday prayers took place calmly although anti-government protesters have filled the streets of Jerusalem this week with opponents of the move to sack Shin Bet head Ronen Bar joining forces with protesters angry at the decision to resume fighting in Gaza, breaking a two-month-old ceasefire, while 59 Israeli hostages remain in the Palestinian enclave.
Al-Aqsa lies at the heart of Jerusalem's old city, it is Islam's third holiest site and is known to Jews as Temple Mount.
