Israel's Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction on Friday (March 21) temporarily freezing the dismissal of the head of the domestic intelligence service, according to a ruling published on the court's website.
In photos posted on social media by the Israeli army on Friday, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar appeared with military chief of staff Eyal Zamir, in what the army said was a security assessment with military leadership at the Southern Command.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced last week that he had lost confidence in Bar and intended to dismiss him, prompting tens of thousands to join demonstrations in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv this week protesting the sacking, which critics saw as an attempt to undermine key state institutions.
Protests continued into Friday, with scores of dissenters marching through the streets of Jerusalem, the seat of the Israeli government. Earlier protesters clashed with police while trying to breach barriers towards Netanyahu's official residence.
The court ruling will allow the court to consider petitions launched against the dismissal, which was approved by the cabinet late on Thursday (March 20), with a decision no later than April 8, the statement said.
