- Story Text: Kurds celebrated Nowruz in rallies held across Syria on Thursday (March 20) for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
Wearing colourful clothes, people waved Kurdistan flags as they danced and lit bonfires on mountains in Afrin, as well as in squares in Amuda and Damascus.
Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is celebrated at the beginning of spring.
It is an important festival in Kurdish culture in which people gather to play games, dance and eat.
"From Afrin to Derik, to Iraq, Kobani, Syria, Turkey and the Kurdish region, we send our greetings to everyone," said Tarek Youssef in Amuda.
The celebrations this year come weeks after the Kurdish-led and U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, which controls much of Syria's oil-rich northeast, signed a deal with the Damascus government to join Syria's new state institutions.
