- Story Text:Hundreds of students protested on Friday (March 21) in front of Istanbul University against the detention of the city's popular mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, part of nationwide demonstrations.
They were due to march to the municipality building to join a rally for the third night running.
The Republican People's Party (CHP) mayor faces an array of charges, and on Friday, the party chairman said they would hold an extraordinary meeting next month after an Ankara prosecutor launched an investigation into the party's latest congress held in 2023 over irregularities.
President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey would not tolerate any threats to public order, and he vowed to stand firm against vandalism and street violence, amid growing protests against the detention.
Imamoglu, who is Erdogan's main political rival and leads him in some polls, can be held until Sunday (March 23), by which time the court must decide on his arrest.
The CHP has condemned the move as politically motivated and urged people to demonstrate lawfully, while European leaders have called it a sign of democratic backsliding.
