- Story Text: Polish President Andrzej Duda visited his Hungarian counterpart on Friday (March 21) to mark their countries' historic friendship.
Speaking at an event in the southern town of Kaposvar, Duda emphasised the importance of translatlantic ties for Central and Eastern Europe, and that Hungary and Poland should be in solidarity with one another and show mutual respect.
Duda will end his second term later this year, and Poles will vote for his successor in an election in May.
Budapest and Warsaw have historically had close ties, but relations have been strained since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the return of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to government in 2023.
Tusk has been critical of Hungary's Viktor Orban on issues including his stance on the war in Ukraine and policies that Poland considers to be pro-Russian. Orban has told Hungarian media that Tusk's government considers Hungarians to be enemies.
