  • Story Text: Greece's most famous landmark, the Acropolis of Athens, was engulfed in darkness on Saturday (March 22) to mark Earth Hour.
    Lights were switched off at the 5th century BC Parthenon temple and the other ancient temples on the Acropolis hill from 1930GMT (8:30 pm local time) for one hour.
    The global event, initiated by the international organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007, raises awareness over climate change and the need to protect the environment.
    The event has grown since its inception, when households were encouraged to turn off their lights for an hour, with famous landmarks in several capitals around the world participating each year.
    Along with the Acropolis monuments, Greece's parliament building and hotels in the capital, as well as the White Tower in the northern city of Thessaloniki, also took part and switched off their lights.
