- Story Text: Tom Gray, the Managing Editor of Ring Magazine, has paid tribute to two time world heavyweight champion George Foreman who died on Friday (March 21) at the age of 76.
In an interview with the BBC, Gray described Foreman as a "miracle man" who "overcame the odds" throughout his career to become a legend of the sport and at 45 years old, the oldest fighter to become world champion at the time in 1994.
An intimidating, thunderous puncher who lost his first title to Muhammad Ali in their famous "Rumble in the Jungle" in 1974, "Big George" knocked out Michael Moorer for his second crown two decades later - something Gray believes could arguably be one of the greatest moments in sporting history.
Gray also retold how Foreman, who described himself as a mugger in his youth, found boxing to help him move away from crime and in a short time became Olympic Champion in 1964. To go on and become world champion in an era that contained the likes of Mohammed Ali, Joe Frazier and Ron Lyall is, according to Gray, "against the odds" and marks him down as one of boxing's finest fighters.
