- Story Text: As the world marks Water day on Saturday (March 22) Greenpeace warned that extreme weather events, including torrential rains and prolonged droughts, are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
The Las Niñas water dam in Gran Canaria, the island’s second-largest reservoir with a capacity of 5.18 million cubic meters, remains severely dry, raising concerns about worsening droughts.
Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands have a distinct climate and geographical conditions.
Greenpeace reiterated that Spain’s water crisis remains a pressing issue despite recent rainfall.
Greenpeace water campaign spokesperson, Julio Barea, stressed that heavy rains provide only temporary relief. . Meanwhile, heavy rains in mainland Spain have caused flooding in towns like Cartama, where residents have struggled with inundated homes and streets.
Experts warn that extreme weather patterns will continue, making sustainable water management a critical priority for the country.
Water Day is held by the United Nations every year since 1993.
The day highlights the importance of freshwater, and a new theme is chosen every year by UN-Water - the UN’s coordination mechanism on water and sanitation.
