- Story Text: Floods continue to wreak havoc across Madrid on Saturday (March 22) after Storm Martinho’s heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, leaving fields submerged.
Areas like San Fernando de Henares, on the eastern outskirts, were severely impacted by the influx of water.
Antonio, a 40-year-old resident of the neighbourhood, said it was hard to know the extent of the damage - and whether insurance policies would cover any of the damage.
The Manzanares river, which runs through the heart of Madrid, has swollen to dangerous levels, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings.
Police have cordoned off affected areas, and emergency services are closely monitoring the situation.
Many residents gathered along the river, taking pictures of the rising waters.
The impact of the storm has been felt beyond Madrid, as various regions across Spain face similar severe weather conditions.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay safe, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep up with the latest updates as emergency crews continue to assess and respond to the crisis.
Storm Martinho first hit Spain on Thursday (March 20) and authorities have warned residents to stay away from areas where levels of water are getting closer to the streets.
