- Story Text: Sarah Jessica Parker, well known for playing New York columnist and fashionista Carrie Bradshaw in HBO television series and movies "Sex and the City", turns 60 on Tuesday (March 25).
Born in March 1965 in Nelsonville, Ohio, Parker began her TV acting career in the 1980s in such shows as "Square Pegs" and "A Year in the Life".
She also featured as schoolgirl Rusty in coming-of-age teen drama "Footloose" in 1984, starring Kevin Bacon as Ren, a city teen who tries to bring Rock and Roll music and dancing back to a small town where it has been banned.
Other TV and big screen roles continued for Parker, including starring in witchcraft comedy "Hocus Pocus" (1993), playing one of the Sanderson sisters who are awoken from their 17th century slumber to wreck havoc and magic on the modern-day town of Salem. A second film was released in 2022.
Parker is best known for her role as Carrie in 1998 HBO series "Sex and the City" about four female New Yorkers and their sex lives, as well as dealing with being a woman in 1990s' New York City. It co-starred Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon as Carrie's best friends, as well as Chris Noth as Carrie's on-off beau, Big.
Parker won two Primetime Emmy awards for role and the series in 2001 and 2004, as well as a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a television series - comedy or musical for playing Carrie in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004.
The series turned into two movies in 2008 and 2010 respectively. A third was planned but was shelved, with Parker telling celebrity TV outlet Extra in September 2017 that: "It's over. We're not doing it," despite years of on-again, off-again planning, and Cattrall saying she was not the one to blame.
"The only 'DEMAND' I ever made was that I didn't want to do a 3rd film.... & that was back in 2016," Cattrall said on Twitter at the time.
Parker has also starred in a variety of big-screen comedies including "L.A. Story", "The First Wives Club", "Mars Attacks!", "The Family Stone", "Failure to Launch" and "Did You Hear About the Morgans?".
In 2021, Parker returned as Carrie in new "Sex and the City" chapter, "And Just Like That", reuniting original cast members Davis, Nixon and Noth, but not Cattrall.
Parker is a successful stage actor too, making her West End debut with husband and actor Matthew Broderick in a revival of the Broadway play "Plaza Suite" in 2024.
The couple married in May 1997 and have three children.
