- Story Text:Hundreds of police swept a crowd near the Istanbul municipality building on Saturday (March 22) as they protested against the detention of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Police used tear gas and pepper spray pellets against the protesters to disperse them after a speech by Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel outside the municipality ended. The protesters returned to set up barricades, which police knocked down again shortly after.
Imamoglu was taken to Istanbul's main courthouse earlier on Saturday to give his statement to prosecutors, who will then release him or transfer him to a court with a request for him to be jailed pending trial.
