- Story Text: Catholic worshippers gathered at a Buenos Aires church on Saturday (March 22) to celebrate the news of Pope Francis' scheduled discharge from hospital in Rome.
A Mass was held in his honour, with participants expressing gratitude and joy after receiving the news that the 88-year-old's health had improved to the point he could return to the Vatican.
Worshipper Raquel Martinez said the news gave her "goosebumps," adding that she was emotionally moved.
Pope Francis, who was born in the Argentinian capital, has been battling pneumonia for more than five weeks.
His medical team announced earlier on Saturday that he will be discharged from hospital on Sunday (March 23), but will need a further two months of rest at the Vatican.
Francis was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection that became the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.
While Francis will return to the Vatican, his doctors said it would take "a lot of time" for his ageing body to fully heal.
