  • Story Text: World Water Day is set to be marked on Saturday (March 22). It is an observance day held by the United Nations every year since 1993.
    The day highlights the importance of freshwater, and a new theme is chosen every year by UN-Water - the UN’s coordination mechanism on water and sanitation.
    The theme for 2025 is Glacier Preservation with a focus on preventing their rapid melting. The UN says the change in meltwater flows is "causing floods, droughts, landslides and sea level rise." In a statement, it warns countless communities and ecosystems are at risk of devastation.
    Global reductions in carbon emissions and local strategies to adapt to shrinking glaciers are essential, the UN says.
    Additionally, The United Nations has proclaimed March 21 of each year as the World Day for Glaciers, starting in 2025.
