- Story Text: Detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was brought to the city's main courthouse on Saturday (March 22) to give a statement to prosecutors.
Imamoglu, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's biggest political rival, was detained on Wednesday (March 19) on alleged corruption and terrorism charges, in what the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) said was a "coup attempt."
Tens of thousands of Turks have taken to the streets since his detention in Turkey's biggest show of civil disobedience in more than a decade.
Police have used tear gas, pepper spray and water cannons to disperse the crowd protesting in several cities across the country, including Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
Imamoglu is expected to be questioned by prosecutors, who will then release him or transfer him to a court with a request for him to be jailed pending trial.
An order for his formal arrest could prompt further protests across the country.
