- Story Text:Istanbul lawyers were blocked by police from entering the courthouse where mayor Ekrem Imamoglu attended a hearing on Saturday (March 22).
Lawyers wearing red collars were outside the court alongside other protesters to show their support for Imamoglu, but were refused entry by the police, despite the lawyers saying they should be permitted to enter any court regardless of who they represent.
The large crowd chanted, raised their fists and pushed towards a line of riot police outside the court.
Imamoglu denied terrorism charges brought against him, according to a court document seen by Reuters on Saturday, after he was detained by Turkey on Wednesday (March 19) for alleged corruption and terrorism.
Imamoglu is a key opposition figure and potential challenger to longtime President Tayyip Erdogan.
