- Story Text: Police fired pepper spray at opposition protesters gathered outside Istanbul's municipality building on Saturday (March 22) as they demonstrated against the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu .
Many protesters wore goggles and masks, with some throwing flares at the police, who responded with pepper spray.
Imamoglu has denied terrorism charges brought against him, according to a court document seen by Reuters on Saturday, after he was detained by Turkey on Wednesday (March 19) for alleged corruption and terrorism.
Imamoglu is a key opposition figure and potential challenger to longtime President Tayyip Erdogan.
The pro-opposition protesters in Istanbul were rallying for the fourth night in a row, following his detention.
