- Story Text: Turkish opposition supporters said on Monday (March 24) that they believe jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was being subjected to "injustice."
Imamoglu was jailed pending trial on Sunday (March 23), as the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) held a presidential primary election with the mayor as the only candidate.
Around 15 million cast their ballots in support of Imamoglu.
The news of his arrest covered the front pages of Turkish newspapers on Monday, with opposition media outlets suggesting he was arrested because he was the most credible candidate against Erdogan.
"I think there is an injustice towards Imamoglu. They put the man in prison for no reason," said Adem Bali, a 22 year-old construction worker.
Cigdem Tatlica, an unemployed 50-year-old, said she believes there is no justice in Turkey. "This order cannot continue like this. But I mean, we don't know what to do either," she said.
"I'm even thinking of leaving the country. I don't want to live here anymore."
