- Story Text:Police pepper sprayed a crowd of protesters and detained some of the people after thousands rallied on Sunday (March 23) outside the Istanbul municipality.
Police scuffled with the protesters as they attempted to push the crowd back.
Some protesters could be seen being taken away by police officers. Protesters at times threw objects back the police stationed under an ancient aqueduct.
A Turkish court on Sunday jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Tayyip Erdogan's main political rival, pending trial on corruption charges in a move that inflamed the country's biggest protests in more than a decade.
