- Story Text:Anti-government protesters in Ankara were pushed back by police on Sunday (March 23) after water cannon were used for about an hour.
Police have clashed with protesters in the capital as well as Istanbul and Izmir over the jailing and arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the main political rival of Turkish President Tayyib Erdogan, pending trial on corruption charges.
Imamoglu's arrest caps a months-long legal crackdown on opposition figures and the removal of other elected officials from office.
Imamoglu is also facing terrorism charges, but the court did not formally arrest him on those at the same time.
A future ruling to jail him pending trial on these charges could allow the government to appoint a trustee to run Istanbul.
A conviction could prevent him running for president for the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
A nationwide ban on street gatherings was extended on Saturday (March 22) for four more days but protests, scattered skirmishes and detentions continued in major cities on Sunday, the fifth night of mostly peaceful anti-government demonstrations.
