  • Story Text: Around 900 children in Iraq's Basra took part in an Iftar meal on Friday (March 21), organised by the Baraem Al-Narjis Foundation and the Safa Humanitarian Charity Association for orphans.
    Organisers said the majority of children were orphans, all of them from the city of Basra.
    The Baraem Al-Narjis and Safa Humanitarian Charity Association both focus on supporting orphans, providing them with assistance in the form of clothing, food baskets, and lump sums of money, as well as educational courses for girls, such as sewing and others, the charities said.
    These institutions depend on donations, and there is no government support for them or any political party, they said.
    Safa Falah, the Director of Safa Humanitarian Charity Association, said that the initiative is funded by donations from the community “including police officers, workers, and traders.... Everyone contributes to this table."
    Hussain Nazem, the Director of the Baraem Al-Narjis Foundation, highlighted that these types of organizations in Basra and Iraq have increased in recent years and have become more active after 2014 due to "many events that have occurred in the country".
