- Story Text: Argentines gathered across the country on Monday (March 24), marking 49 years since the start of one of the darkest periods in the South American nation's history, the last military coup.
The main protests made up of thousands took place in Buenos Aires in front of the iconic Casa Rosada Presidential Palace, led by the historic Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, mothers of disappearance victims. Various groups, unions, human rights organizations, and Argentine families also joined.
The dictatorship, which lasted nearly eight years (1976-1983), is remembered for the pain endured by the people due to disappearances, repression, and torture during this period, which were denounced and investigated over time. Various organizations estimate that up to 30,000 people were kidnapped, tortured, and killed during this period.
Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni announced on Monday a decision to declassify files held by the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE) related to military and guerrilla activities between 1976 and 1983, among other measures.
