- Story Text: Riot police in the Turkish capital Ankara appeared to push anti-government protesters down a main road with water cannons on Sunday (March 23), after a long stand-off over the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu pending trial on corruption charges.
The dispersal of the protesters came after about one hour of police water cannons dousing them.
The decision to send Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's main rival to jail comes after the main opposition party, European leaders and hundreds of thousands of protesters criticised the actions against him as politicised and undemocratic.
As the courtroom developments unfolded, there were signs that the mayor's troubles were galvanizing opposition against Erdogan's government, which has run Turkey for 22 years.
